Streamlined
TOEFL and English
Preparation (STEP)
at Torrance Campus
Class
Description
The
standard TOEFL preparation class teaches only three skills:
listening, reading and grammar. These skills are important,
but what about speaking, pronunciation, and writing? What
about grammar that is not tested on the TOEFL? What about
reading newspapers, magazines and information on the internet?
These things are important also. That is why we have developed
the STEP class.
What
is STEP? Streamlined
TOEFL and English
Preparation. The
goal of STEP is
to prepare students for the TOEFL while also increasing
their English skills. Preparing only for the TOEFL is
not enough. To be successful at university or in college
students need more than TOEFL, they need a complete
class; this is STEP.
STEP
covers all of the important material on the TOEFL. STEP
includes speaking and writing work. STEP
uses readings from both TOEFL tests and the real world.
STEP is divided
equally between standard English and TOEFL English so
students can improve their TOEFL score and their English
skills at the same time.
Students
who want more TOEFL preparation, especially students
who want to go to university or graduate school, will
be able to enter the Advanced TOEFL class after successfully
completing the STEP
class.
Goal
The
goal of the STEP class
is to prepare students for undergraduate work at community
or state college, or to prepare them for the Advanced
TOEFL class. For both purposes students need a combination
of TOEFL preparation and general English skills, STEP
combines both so that students have a more complete knowledge
of English, allowing them to compete successfully wherever
they choose to go.
