In LSI's reading classes, students read a novel, novelette or series of short stories in addition to the course's textbook. Reading literature is not only a great technique to improve vocabulary and comprehension, but it's a wonderful way to learn about a culture. Below, some LSI students tell us about their favorite books.
Student: Natalia
Nationality: Ukrainian
Book and Class: Points of View, Reading Level 7
Quote: I like reading short interesting stories. My favorite short story in the book was "My Side of the Matter", by Truman Capote. It is a really funny story about real life. The reason I loved it is that I am a funny person too!
Student: Ariya
Nationality: Thai
Book and Class: Holes, Reading Level 6
Quote: What I liked about reading this book in class is that we also watched clips from the movie, so I was able to study both written and spoken English. It is a clever book, and the mystery of what is happening makes you really want to finish it and find out the secret.
Student: Masako
Nationality: Japanese
Book and Class: Twilight - New Moon, Reading Level 7
Quote: I usually don't read fantasy books, but it is impossible to stop reading this one. I am sure that the books are better than the movies, but I read the books and then saw the movies anyway. I love New Moon. It is soooooo interesting.
Student: Perm
Nationality: German
Book and Class: Holes, Reading Level 6
Quote: A good thing about Holes is that it's not so difficult, and it's very interesting. I also like the fact that after we have read a section, we can watch that part of the video so that it really keeps things interesting since we can check what we understood and discuss things.
Student: Ann
Nationality: Thai
Book and Class: He's Just Not That Into You, Reading Level 7
Quote: I like He's Just Not That Into You because I like the guy's advice. It is a very funny story. I can also learn a lot of useful idioms and vocabulary.

My English has improved a lot in the TOEFL iBT® class. I have learned many tips and have practiced writing. Professor David gives us good examples and has taught us how to organize the structure of English writing. He also analyzes sentence structure in detail and explains vocabulary in an easy way. We practice speaking by discussing the reading’s topic from the book or from recent news in America. The TOEFL teacher has inspired me to think more about my life and the environment.
